And for a brief, shining moment, we thought she was going to end up a grand lady, outranking her whole family, when her beau Bertie Pelham's cousin unexpectedly dies of malaria, leaving him the new Marquess of Hexham (that's a Big Deal). Things had been going so well for Season 6's breakout star, with her stable job and steady relationship and growing confidence. Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) checks in on her newsroom. Whether or not she deserves it is another question entirely. And YET, when she summons Henry to Downton, he comes running and-surprise!-he has a marriage license in his pocket, why not get married on Saturday? And so it seems Mary will get her happily ever after, after all, which is why we reluctantly put her in the "upstairs" category. She's so thoroughly unlikable that even when she finally admits that she pushed Henry away because she can't deal with the terror his car racing causes her, it isn't enough to justify her horrible actions. She blames a shaken Robert for Thomas' suicide attempt (more on that below), causing her father to remark, "That's a bit below the belt, even for you." She even gets into a shouting match with Branson, the only one brave enough to call her out on all her crap. She "lets slip" the secret about Marigold, breaking up Edith and Bertie. After giving Henry the heave-ho last episode, Mary's miserable and determined to make everyone else miserable too. Mary: Everything you've ever hated about Mary-her selfishness, snobbiness, bitterness, meanness-is displayed in full force in this episode, and yet she still manages to get everything she wants. Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) of "Downton Abbey." (Nick Briggs / )
